What are the students like?

The student population is diverse. In the academic year 2007-08, the average age of students in degree programs was 31. About 25 percent of the student body is from the Pacific Northwest. International students represent 35 countries. Women comprise 80 percent of the student body. All undergraduate students are junior-level transfers, with an average incoming GPA of 3.3.

About 1,101 undergraduate and graduate students were enrolled in Bastyr University's natural health arts and sciences degree programs in 2007-08. According to our student enrollment estimates:

  • Graduate degree programs: 244 students
  • Naturopathic doctoral programs: 478 students
  • Bachelor's degree programs: 213 students
  • Certificate programs: 19 students.
  • Applied behavioral science (LIOS) programs: 146 students

Is there University housing?

Yes. University housing is located on the fifth floor of the main campus building. For more information, visit our housing section.

Do you require standardized tests for admission?

No. We believe that standardized tests provide very little useful information. We consider GPA and a number of factors besides academic performance, such as personality, motivation and relevant experience.

What are the bookstore and library like at Bastyr?

The University Bookstore carries all required and recommended books for courses. A wide selection of reference books is also available, plus University T-shirts, sweatshirts and glassware. You may reach the bookstore at (425) 602-3026.

The Bastyr library has over 19,000 volumes, 250 journal subscriptions, extensive audiovisual materials, and a continuously expanding collection of materials on alternative medicine and natural health. Contact the library at (425) 602-3020 or via e-mail.

Who was John Bastyr?

John Bastyr, ND, was President Emeritus of National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon, and teacher and mentor for the founding physicians of Bastyr University. Dr. Bastyr was one of the pioneers and heroes of naturopathic medicine, an advocate of the profession throughout his career and an inspirational healer. Does Bastyr University have religious affiliations?

No. Bastyr's philosophy is based on the healing power of nature, which has spiritual connotations for some.

What is the weather really like in Seattle?

Winters in the Pacific Northwest are mild -- usually cloudy with some rain showers and drizzle. Big storms and other forms of extreme weather are rare. "Northwesterners" are big on rain gear because nothing keeps them indoors (except studying).

How far is the university from Seattle?

The campus is 14 miles from downtown Seattle and about five miles from the city limits. Public transportation is accessible to and from the campus. Is the University's teaching clinic on campus?

Our new and revitalized teaching clinic, Bastyr Center for Natural Health, is located in the Fremont/Wallingford district of Seattle 10 miles from campus.

Do you have online or distance learning courses?

We currently have no online or distance learning courses, although we may offer some courses in the future.

Can I take a course if I'm not an enrolled, or matriculated, student?

Yes. You may take an undergraduate, nonprofessional course if you meet the prerequisite requirements and if room is available in the class. Fully matriculated students receive priority enrollment. To enroll in a graduate or professional course, you must obtain prior approval from the dean of students or department chair. Do you provide campus tours?

Just about every weekday is a "tour day" on campus, as the admissions office provides visitors with a self-guided tour during business hours. Also be sure to check out our online virtual tour. Schedule a visit to campus.
